Dyffryn Gardens

Dyffryn was laid out by a passionate garden owner and horticulturalist, Reginald Cory, with advice from the Edwardian landscape architect, Thomas Mawson, to create one of Wales’ greatest and most popular historic gardens. Despite this, the Gardens had faced an uncertain future. The opportunity arose to revitalise the Gardens and ensure their continued central role in the life of the community. We prepared a Historic Landscape Survey of the gardens, identifying their existing condition, function and constraints on use, and the opportunities for their restoration and long term positive management. Our study, grant aided by the Heritage Lottery Fund, supported an application by the Council to the Heritage Lottery Fund, and resulted in the first major award under the Urban Parks Programme totalling £3.25 million for phase 1. We were involved in the implementation of the scheme, and have also helped the Council secure and implement a substantial phase 2 award for visitor and educational facilities, with new horticultural compound and glasshouses, now complete.
