Montacute, Somerset

Montacute is, perhaps, the epitome of the late Tudor mansion, housing the National Portrait Gallery's Tudor portraits in the second storey long gallery. Proposals to extend the town of Yeovil towards Montacute were of great concern to the National Trust.

The first stage of the Setting Study was to gain an understanding of the designed views to and from the historic house and landscape. This involved a review of the documentary research and reports to identify key phases in the site’s development, the extent and character of the historic designed landscape, and a review of historic views to and from Montacute. We also mapped the zone of visual influence around Montacute using the latest in GIS technology, to identify the potential impacts of different types of development on Montacute’s landscape as well as views towards and from the historic estate.
